Up wheels the guard<br \/>\non his silent scooter.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s cranky:&nbsp; all day paintings<br \/>\nmurmur <em>Take me please&nbsp; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>in modern and archaic<br \/>\ntongues.&nbsp; Meanwhile out<\/p>\n<p>beyond Bernisse, two thieves&nbsp;<br \/>\nremove their gloves as light&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>pours through barn-slats.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnder layers of linseed oil&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gaugin\u2019s <em>La Fianc\u00e9e<\/em> warms&nbsp;<br \/>\nwith pleasure:&nbsp; finally her body<\/p>\n<p>is moving unpredictably,<br \/>\nlike everything worth redeeming.<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The Amp<\/h3>\n<p>You visit Ireland so late<br \/>\nin life you\u2019ve seen the sights<br \/>\nbefore you see them:<br \/>\nBlarney Stone,<em> check.<br \/>\n<\/em>Bog mummies, <em>check.<br \/>\n<\/em>Kilkenny.&nbsp; The Cliffs of Moher.<br \/>\nThen on the Sligo High Street<br \/>\na man in scuffed boots<br \/>\nplugs a mic<\/p>\n<p>into a portable amp<br \/>\nand starts to sing, horribly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You retreat<\/p>\n<p>into Teague\u2019s Discount Shoes,<br \/>\nbut \u201cBenny and the Jets\u201d follows you,<br \/>\nhorribly, horribly,<br \/>\nthrough the open door,<br \/>\ndown aisles of brogues and heels.<\/p>\n<p>The shoe clerk shakes her head.<br \/>\n<em>God bless his voice, <\/em>she says,<br \/>\nand you feel a jolt,<br \/>\nlike a plane landing<br \/>\nin a country where you are still alone<br \/>\nbut less divorced<br \/>\nfrom the buried stones, the ruins<br \/>\nof the old monastic city.<\/p>\n<h3>Apocrypha<\/h3>\n<p>The cat slumps dead<br \/>\nin the vet\u2019s arms,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>his weight exact at last.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nCats are engineered<\/p>\n<p>to pad from year to year,<br \/>\ntheir skeletons light<\/p>\n<p>reversible equations<br \/>\naloof from paradoxes<\/p>\n<p>posed by humans,<br \/>\nand yet this cat&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>is simultaneously<br \/>\ntoo fixed and too free<\/p>\n<p>to burn or bury fully,<br \/>\nlike the Holy Trinity,<\/p>\n<p>or like memory,<br \/>\nand so his cells&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>chill slowly, settling&nbsp;<br \/>\ninto the planar ambiguity&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>of El Greco\u2019s <em>Pieta<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nEven St. Paul sanctioned<\/p>\n<p>the apocryphal Bible,<br \/>\nthe one with the parable<\/p>\n<p>of a cat that out-leapt<br \/>\nJordan\u2019s depths.&nbsp; In death,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>does the spirit begin<br \/>\nto move, or does it rest?<\/p>\n<p>The cat replies <em>both <\/em><\/p>\n<p>in a dialect that\u2019s 90% water,<\/p>\n<p>because, as searchers&nbsp;<br \/>\nand divers know,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>after a corpse sinks&nbsp;<br \/>\nit reverses course and floats.<\/p>\n<h3>Reading Trouble<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAye and yes, Starbuck, out of those forty years I have not spent three ashore.\u201d&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;\u2014Herman Melville, Moby-Dick<\/p>\n<p>When the first Starbucks ever<br \/>\nopened in downtown Seattle<\/p>\n<p>I went there on a semi-date<br \/>\nwith a kid who later OD\u2019d,<\/p>\n<p>but who really died of dyslexia:<br \/>\nif he\u2019d learned to read<\/p>\n<p>as fluently as he dreamed,<br \/>\nhe could\u2019ve finished high school,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>and lived to see Starbucks<br \/>\ngo viral from Seattle to Milwaukee,<\/p>\n<p>which makes me want to bring coffee<br \/>\nto that dead kid, David Lee,<\/p>\n<p>except it\u2019s expensive and hard<br \/>\nto order: no medium, no large,<\/p>\n<p>just veni, vidi, vici,<br \/>\nas if the most blah transaction<\/p>\n<p>could go all Virgil\u2019s Aeneid,<br \/>\ncould go all Ovid\u2019s Metamorphoses,<\/p>\n<p>even in Wisconsin,&nbsp;<br \/>\nand it can,<\/p>\n<p>but you have to be a reader.<br \/>\n<em>Unfair, unfair,<\/em> sings the land-<\/p>\n<p>locked mermaid over the door.<br \/>\nBut she too comes from a book.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Heist Transportation\u2019s tough, if you want to be transported: the blockbuster museum\u2019s hush is uniform, like sand.&nbsp;
