Jammed against<br \/>\na man-made wall, he would fade out<br \/>\nof his overexposed life,<br \/>\nbut a chain collars him to a bike;<br \/>\nneck and prop bound in motion\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>tug\u2019o war&#8211;he\u2019s screwed<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; in black and white.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The trainee\u2019s eyes arc beyond the frame<br \/>\nat empty space where the trainer\u2019s cropped<br \/>\nface has gone. Only form looms\u2014a sleeve drips<br \/>\na taloned hand, the other floats a whip, set<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; to whale the air, to etch flesh.<\/p>\n<p><em>&nbsp;<\/em>Re-versed by life\u2019s circus run<br \/>\nthis old world primate\u2019s ancient name<br \/>\nevokes Homeric epic: Thracian King Rhesus,<br \/>\nat Troy, wrapped in gold and silver sleep<br \/>\nand the raider\u2019s night-work ripping away<br \/>\nhis sweet life <em>as a nightmare hovered above his head. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>The ripped-off rhesus would opt for rainforest gilt&#8211;<br \/>\nunruly hand-over-hand, would scale<br \/>\na braided rope of vined sun to lick silver dew,<br \/>\nthen flush with fruit and grubs run the holy wild<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; alongside Hanuman.<\/p>\n<p>But the nightmare hovers, still.<br \/>\n&nbsp;A muse meant for play<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; scares<\/p>\n<p>natural light, shutters<br \/>\nan undreamed, human other\u2026..Begin<\/p>\n<p>again at the origin&#8211;the first link<br \/>\nforged. reflect<br \/>\nas you starve the abject subject to comply,<br \/>\nisolate the rhesus infant in Harlow\u2019s<br \/>\n<em>pit of despair<\/em>, breed infection&#8211;<br \/>\nextract the motherlode antigen.<br \/>\nWith end in mind, slice through<br \/>\nspinal nerves, crack skulls open<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; I<\/p>\n<p>Hot equatorial winds spiral<strong>, <\/strong>co-mix, currents whirl<br \/>\nwhip round the North Pacific Gyre once an ocean dervish<br \/>\nnow a concentric garbage swirl<\/p>\n<p>One-hundred million tons, offhand vortex of squashed cups,<br \/>\ncrushed bottles, bobbing Ziploc bags, fused six-pack rings,<br \/>\ntwisting dolls, balls, Bics, yesterday\u2019s plastic bits<\/p>\n<p>rush downstream, gush non-stop into weeks months years<br \/>\nthe collective unconscious glut, caught in river\u2019s junked maw<br \/>\ndisgorged into pollution\u2019s Sargasso.<\/p>\n<p>Left to our own ends, refuse all ends where life began<br \/>\nin once-sane waters&#8211;on our aqua sea face we pitch<br \/>\nunknown, unseen, afar &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;a new rubbish continent. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; II<\/p>\n<p>High noon on too-calm waters&nbsp;<br \/>\na manmade mantle bars the sun<br \/>\nthe autotrophs future darkens, I know &nbsp;<br \/>\nbut don\u2019t show me<\/p>\n<p>what Charles Moore sighted<br \/>\n&#8211;no more pristine ocean, but a Pacific<br \/>\nvomiting endless plastic&#8211;no<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; don\u2019t show me<\/p>\n<p>reckless freight carriers struck &nbsp;<br \/>\nby the storm\u2019s <em>o\u2019ertaking wings<br \/>\n<\/em>the candy-coloured crate\u2019s sway and topple<br \/>\nquieten the jetsam<\/p>\n<p>running off with my peace of mind, a tsunami<br \/>\nof unliquidated Nike sneakers, rubber ducks<br \/>\nhockey gloves, socking the brain<br \/>\ndon\u2019t show me<\/p>\n<p>sea foam hurling up the aquatic dead<br \/>\ncrazy miles of branded bags\u2014salt-thinned<br \/>\nstrands that mock jellyfish and poison sea turtles &nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nsilence the ocean\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>flotsam roar curling into a death-mute<br \/>\nconch sinking, abysmal, beneath<br \/>\nthe whole caboodle&#8211;no lifeline<br \/>\ntomorrow I\u2019ll come around<\/p>\n<p>awake from sleep\u2019s ringed underbelly strangling<br \/>\nseabirds and in the wake of sail boats strung<br \/>\non the horizon, I\u2019ll find myself\u2014missing, at sea &nbsp;<br \/>\ndownhill from everything.<\/p>\n<p>III<\/p>\n<p>Work quick\u2014too slow\u2014tight-fisted<br \/>\nincessant hustle; disposable suns<br \/>\ndawn as the world\u2019s poor pull chariots &nbsp;<br \/>\nof cheap goods across the sky. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The World Packaging Organization<br \/>\ntakes the <em>on-the go-lifestyle\u2019s<\/em> compulsive pulse,<br \/>\ngraphs the <em>time-poor consumer\u2019s <\/em>steadfast<br \/>\nunconcern for environmental-cide.<\/p>\n<p>Morning breaks on blister-packed muffins<br \/>\nafternoon pops clamshell containers<br \/>\nhousing huge, flavour-looted berries &nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; triple-wrapped evenings muffle trash bins.<\/p>\n<p>Growth scents the air with doublespeak:<br \/>\nrecycle, rebuy, regurgitate, remember<br \/>\nthere\u2019s opportunity in the breakdown &nbsp;<br \/>\nof the sit-down family dinner<br \/>\nand while families break down<br \/>\nplastic is forever.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
