Apart from being overweight, she is bullied at school. She&nbsp;resumes classes to the harsh reality of&nbsp;offensive words scribbled on her desk,&nbsp;insults&nbsp;which transcend playful torments,&nbsp;restroom lock-ins<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She dies in the hands of her victimizers every day\u2014thinks&nbsp;of fighting back\u2014thinks of&nbsp;shooting sprees and whatnots. She justifies her reticence &nbsp;from violence with a crucial conviction: school shooters are usually bullies or victims of bullying.&nbsp;<i>&#8220;Some people actually learn psychopathy,<\/i>&#8221;&nbsp;she says to herself as thoughts of guns and blood flash through her mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">But again\u2014she considers the consequences and restrains herself from decadence\u2014 mass murders are more often than not accompanied by the annihilation of their perpetrators. She guts up and&nbsp;speaks to her teacher\u2014 she doesn&#8217;t want jail timeand shedoesn&#8217;t want to be a statistic. After she discusses with him, hestorms into her classroom in defiance, rebukes her classmates,&nbsp;insists they all apologize to her individually. Some students snicker still. One of them says&nbsp;he&#8217;ll&nbsp;rather put a knife to his throat than apologize to a fat idiot. She\u2019s not surprised\u2014 the&nbsp;rite of apologies brings an imposterto light. She&nbsp;looks away from him as she&#8217;s not the talk back type, fumbles with the pen in her hand. Her eyes meet the teacher&#8217;s who&#8217;s looking on from a corner. He doesn&#8217;t notice the drama. It is brief and quite civilized. His staged apologies do nothing for her, she otherwise, becomes suicidal, until Chudi comes along.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Chudi. He\u2019s as charming as he\u2019s smooth. His easy smile and good looks stay long with her after their first hellos. When she opened the front door to let them in (her cousin and his neighbor, Chudi), his strong perfume rushes at her in wild resonance. It consumes her <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">with a whim. She is startled when he pulls her for a hug, embarrassing heras she&#8217;s meeting him for the first time. She doesn\u2019t know of any good-looking guy that likes fat girls. Shelooks away, confused. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He&nbsp;later walks into&nbsp;the kitchen where she&#8217;s doing the dishes and asks her for some water in a fake American accent. As she hands the glass of water to him, her eye catches a Cupid tattoo on his left arm. He winks at her and&nbsp;downs his water<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2014watches as she fumbles with the runny tap. Her body is stocky and firm, she has big brown eyes, a round, pretty face, a wide and protruding tummy, and very thick arms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He smiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;You should try&nbsp;<i>ice<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2014 you know\u2014 it\u2019s the street name for methamphetamine,&#8221; he says, leaning towards her. &#8220;It&#8217;s an appetite&nbsp;suppressant\u2014 one of my guys uses it for weight loss\u2014you\u2019ll be a freaking size zero in no time.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She says nothing, looks away.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cCome on<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2014you can trust me\u2014 me and you we&#8217;re like cousins now.\u201d She steals a look at him and he pulls her in another embrace. This time she\u2019s more than willing. &#8220;People do stuff to get stuff,&#8221; he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She lay her head on his chest and closes her eyes as she nurtures a whimsy about him, their hearts beating interchangeably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue23\/files\/2016\/07\/leave-image-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue23\/files\/2016\/07\/leave-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"21\" height=\"20\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He&#8217;s been calling her&nbsp;<i>Ice baby<\/i>&nbsp;since she started taking his wonder drug<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. They are now <i>friends with benefits&nbsp;<\/i>and <i>party monsters<\/i>. They go partying with a bunch of reckless kids, smoke&nbsp;<i>ice<\/i>&nbsp;and other abominable things. After partying, they go clubbing, spend like monarchs. He says he\u2019s got some money stuffed away. \u201cWe ain\u2019t broke kids,\u201d he says, smiling. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She doesn\u2019t question him\u2014 Chudi can do no wrong. He solved the only problem bothering her and she\u2019s grateful to him even though she suffers the consequences of her indulgences. When she tells him about the side effects of his wonder drug, he tells her he can fix it, small problem\u2014 but he can&#8217;t\u2014 not entirely tho\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cY<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">eah, I can fix it, but it\u2019s nothing if you don\u2019t focus on it. It\u2019s just ammonia in your sweat.I\u2019ll give you some nice perfumes to cover up. Everybody is hiding something yeah,\u201d he says, taking her hand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cBut my parents will become suspicious,\u201d she says looking away from him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cForget them\u2014 set them straight\u2014 weren\u2019t they making fun of you when you were overweight? You don\u2019t owe them anything!\u201d He says kicking the air. \u201cOkay I\u2019m sorry. I didn\u2019t mean to be disrespectful\u2014but youknow I suck at sucking up. However, they\u2019re just speculating, they don\u2019t know for sure yeah?\u201d He asks, touching her face. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Chudi doesn\u2019t give a hoot what anybody could possibly think about her doping.He thinks&nbsp;<i>ice&nbsp;<\/i>is everything she needs to stop her victimizers, even though her family members are beginning to notice her fallouts. Several people use hard drugs to cure their illnesses, become junkies and abusive due to impaired judgement, die from overdose. As morphine cures cough and body pain; cocaine, cold, headache, neuralgia and nervousness. Hitler\u2019s physician allegedly injected him with high doses of cocaine and eukodal to cure his ear problem. It is said to be the reason for his alertness, and near success of conquering the world. Also, Nazi Germany troops turned to Pervitin and a cocaine chewing gum, which enabled them to advance in battle without the fear of death and fatigue. Oftentimes, hard drugs are used as a means of temporary escape from the psychological disturbance that bullying affords: Marilyn Monroe turned to barbiturates and amphetamines to cure insomnia arising from her bullying experiences in Hollywood, and dies from overdose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue23\/files\/2016\/07\/leave-image-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue23\/files\/2016\/07\/leave-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"21\" height=\"20\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She is now a size eight, ravishing, and confident. She isno longer bullied at school. Instead she watches as other students are being bullied\u2014ripped off their pocket monies\u2014 while their victimizers debunk their allegations and continue to molest them.She\u2019s not happy about it, but she looks away still. Thing isto speak up could mean being tormented for the rest of the school year and she wants none of it. She discusses it with Chudi\u2014tells him she feels guilty\u2014ought to do something. \u201cIt\u2019s becoming rather unbecoming, I feel like an enabler\u2014an accomplice,\u201d she says with a deep sigh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">But he mimics her and laughs hard; a husky, well-meaning one. &#8220;Smart people don&#8217;t go about fixing everybody\u2019s problem<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2014 or are&nbsp;you now Ojukwu? It beats mewhy people act like that. You don\u2019t want to intervene and damage that pretty face now, do you?\u201d he asks. They sigh and fall silent. As a minor, Ojukwu is docked for challenging a British teacher who humiliates a woman at King&#8217;s College, Nigeria. He wasn\u2019t the type to look away when things are about to go south. On the other hand, Syrians in rebel-held Eastern Aleppo were slaughtered and forced to flee their homes due to airstrikes by al-Assad and his allies, and civilians in opposition to his regime were secretly hanged in Saydnaya prison while the world watched. In the words of&nbsp;Ojukwu, &#8220;the history of the world is a chronicle of oppression.\u201d From the bloody enterprise of war and terrorism to drug and human trafficking to Holocaust to slave trade. Scourges from mankind to mankind.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><!--nextpage--><br \/>\nThe students stream&nbsp;into the school cafeteria<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. The aroma of jollof rice and chicken stir a huge turn up today\u2014a long queue soon forms. Behind her, a big boy taunts an albino. He tells him he&#8217;s ugly, jabs him in the rib region and spits on him. The albino is shaken and almost in tears. He looks around for succor, embarrassed and distressed, but no succor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She shrugs. Every time this type of thing happens she dies a new death. His kind has killed her more times than guns people, and she feels like she\u2019s going to lose her head over this one. \u201cLeave him already!\u201d She yells as she now experiences an exaggerated sense of confidence because of all the junk she\u2019s been taking.&nbsp;The big boy moves in on her, towers over her like he\u2019s about to kill a big game. He cusses at her and tells her to go eat her rice and bird and mind her freaking business. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The students jostle against one another to have a better view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cKind words are sweet fragrances,\u201d she says, poking him in the rib region, unable to recognize her own voice.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">He opens his mouth for another exchange, but she dispels him casually with the wave of her hand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He slaps her. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She punches him in return<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2014 lands a big one in his tummy and floors him. He gets up slowly, but staggers and falls. She watches him as he falls a couple more times until he finally drops lifeless. There is silence, then a deafening uproar from the students in the hall. She is scared. She thinks he\u2019s dead. A high school student kills his classmate with a single punch because he pushed him repeatedly in the hallway. But she\u2019s lucky he doesn\u2019t die. Some say the angels had this one. Some it was a skillful punch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">As soon as she gets home she calls Chudi,&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">crying. \u201cI punched this big guy in school because he was bullying another guy. Now he\u2019s screaming blue murder. My life is over!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cMy! What have you done? You\u2019ve got to transfer to my school. Talk to your dad,\u201d Chudi says over the phone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhy? And your mom? Women with wise wackiness! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cYou poor thang! Babe, you should have just walked away. Who fights for the sake of peace anyway? No, I\u2019m not patronizing you and yes, you need this coaching session. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cOk, go ahead call me cray cray<i>. <\/i>But you know&nbsp;<i><\/i>I can\u2019t suck up to you. I can\u2019t even suck up to save my own freaking life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cGeez! Don\u2019t apologize. I\u2019ll do exactly what you want\u2014 mind my own business\u2014 init? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cNo p. But boy you fight dirty! Promise you won\u2019t get into another fight all your life. Don\u2019t want boots on the ground now do we? Don\u2019t want to get all roughed up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue23\/files\/2016\/07\/leave-image-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue23\/files\/2016\/07\/leave-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"21\" height=\"20\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: left;\">A convoy of dark clouds pass over. They ensue enthusiastically. The trees wail and gnash and threaten to uproot as monstrous winds blow. A wild one smacks her face with some earth. She dashes into the house while her cousin takes her luggage inside. She\u2019s been away for a while, at a psychiatric hospital in Accra. She had several bad trips, hallucinates, thinks someone is after her, obsessed with doing household chores and suicidal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Her cousin looks at her and smiles a plastered smile. He tells her her parents are no longer together. He says they played the blame game<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2014things got out of hand\u2014she slapped him and he spat on her\u2014he really doesn\u2019t want to talk about them. She quickly finds the sofa and settles her behind as many things rush in on her. She remembers the doc saying there\u2019s a thing line between mental wellness and mental illness as they all avoid looking at one another in Accra, her parents hardly speaking to each other. \u201cI\u2019m going to take her in. Thank your stars she doesn\u2019t have HIV and her kidney is still running,\u201d the doc adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She sighs and blames her victimizers. Even though a good number of them have been victimized at some point in their lives<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2014thus making it a vicious cycle\u2014 victims&nbsp;and victimizers need mental health support. \u201cAnd Chudi?\u201d she asks. He frowns. He resents her asking about him\u2014resents thinking of both of them\u2014 when they\u2019re together the devil is with them. He tells her he\u2019s nowhere to be found. \u201cHeard he owes some people money and that he was stealing from home to pay off. We&#8217;re afraid he might be dead or just roaming the streets. Life happens you know-.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">His voice creeps into the back of her head as her heart races. She remembers the last time she saw Chudi. The parlor light was a dim red and voices rang from within. The smell of marijuana filled the big room; laughter and music pierced the dark night. It was&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">a lollapalooza of a party, or so she thought. They were boozing and smoking until everything went amber and they felt nothing but sheer ecstasy.\u201cIce baby, let\u2019s toast before you leave\u2014 c\u2019mon don\u2019t be a party-pooper,\u201d he teases as he pulls her back. \u201cTo friends like old wine. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new. For He saith, the old is better.\u201d<i><\/i>She smiles and takes a sip from his cup after him.<i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Her cousin takes her hand, bringing her back. She sizes him up like she hasn\u2019t seen him today. She notices his stick on smile again. It resembles a smirk now. \u201cThere you have it dear<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. Serves you right for being the world\u2019s greatest sucker!\u201d She imagines he is saying. She looks away. He\u2019s had no misfortunes. He\u2019salways been a good boy\u2014always loved his books. He buries his head in them, only to lift it up and raise his thick eyebrows as if it was a eureka moment. She watches as the downpour lashes the windowpanes. Lightning strikes a couple of times and amidst the glow in the room she finds her face in his. Their characteristic big brown eyes and dimples is staring at her. Everybody in the family looked good, but only she was fat\u2014 she struggled with cellulite, and stretch marks, and flabs\u2014she was miserable until she found Chudi. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He takes her hand again. \u201cCoz, I\u2019m sorry about everything. You should take a shot at life again. Put everything behind you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">She looks at him steadily. \u201cYou have no idea, do you? Without Chudi nothing can happen for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He is taken aback. She looks away stubbornly and slips away again. This time she and Chudi are leaving school after Saturday classes. They are the new show ponies in school. T<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">hey buy expensive clothes with stolen money and party every day. Chudi he searches her face. \u201cYou look beautiful, head to toe smashing,\u201d he says cupping her hands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cReally?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cYeah. More than all the Kardashians put together.\u201d&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cGeez!\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cYou\u2019ll be all the days of our lives yeah?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI hope so,\u201d she giggles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">She says say you\u2019re my good luck charm. He says the same. She giggles again. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWith you nothing can ever go wrong. Thanks for everything Chu chu.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m225135075546313521s5\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI got you babe, any day, any time,\u201d he says smiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Her heart begins to race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Chudi can\u2019t be destitute? He was the life of the party.Yes, it\u2019s crazy. How can I be destitute?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">She smiles. Of course.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">He smiles back<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Gosh that smile can break any wall.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Yeah all for you, Angel eyes.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">When I heard, I wanted to tear up.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">And I know you can cry for the whole world.
