{"id":1754,"date":"2017-03-18T01:08:29","date_gmt":"2017-03-18T01:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue22\/?p=1754"},"modified":"2026-05-28T23:04:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T23:04:17","slug":"chielozona-eze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue22\/chielozona-eze\/","title":{"rendered":"Chielozona Eze"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The Art of Loving What is Not Perfect<\/h3>\n<p>My mother loves Saint Anthony,<br \/>\nthe patron of lost things,<br \/>\nincluding me who came back<br \/>\nafter years of exile in the West.<\/p>\n<p><em>You\u2019re still the same<\/em>, she said.<br \/>\n<em>Like all sons in their moms\u2019 hearts<\/em>, I thought.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019ve learned in humble ways:<br \/>\nI\u2019m not the genius she said I was.<br \/>\nNor did I become the rich man she\u2019d hoped to see.<br \/>\nI\u2019m her son, nonetheless, bruised and tempered<\/p>\n<p>by clement and inclement weathers,<br \/>\nby loving and unloving strangers.<\/p>\n<p>I learned from the worms<br \/>\nto wend my way in wet and dirt.<br \/>\nI know that any day could be the end.<br \/>\nUntil then, good Lord, I trudge on, I,<\/p>\n<p>an unfinished poem, tweaks here and there,<br \/>\nand hope<strong>s <\/strong>it will one day give a stranger a smile.<\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;Memory: a Parable<\/h3>\n<p>I know a thing about memory:<br \/>\nIt is a blind dog left in a distant city.<br \/>\nIt finds a home in a shelter, waiting for love.<br \/>\nMonths on, chance brings its master around.<br \/>\nAt the sound of his voice it jumps and barks<br \/>\nand whines and wags its tail.<br \/>\nWill the master reject it again?<\/p>\n<p>But memory is not a dog.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a cat:<br \/>\nstubborn,<br \/>\nclingy,<br \/>\nquiet,<br \/>\npurring beside you<br \/>\neven while you\u2019re on Facebook or WhatsApp<br \/>\nor while you watch Nigeria play Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Memory is a flea<br \/>\nthat loves you<br \/>\nbecause you are alive.<\/p>\n<p>I pluck you, flea, from behind my ear.<br \/>\nI do not throw you away to the dust.<br \/>\nI hold you before my eyes<br \/>\nto remind me I am a mere mortal.<\/p>\n<h3>Memory: a prayer<\/h3>\n<p>To remember is to reach into a fire<br \/>\nto save a letter for you in a foreign tongue.<br \/>\nYou could be burnt again if it\u2019s translated.<\/p>\n<p>I let words, spoken with pain,<br \/>\nbear witness to lives, lived.<br \/>\nI whisper them and pretend<br \/>\nthe dead aren\u2019t dead.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s human without memory?<br \/>\nWhat\u2019s memory that cannot heal?<\/p>\n<p>Christ have mercy on the youth<br \/>\nwho has never hugged a virgin on earth,<br \/>\nbut hopes for seventy-two in heaven.<br \/>\nChrist have mercy on me,<br \/>\nwho mistook war songs for love songs.<\/p>\n<p>We went to war swearing to defeat the world.<br \/>\nWe returned, sad that the world abandoned us.<\/p>\n<p>Years on, did our wounds heal?<br \/>\nOr did they grow numb coatings?<br \/>\nHow could I ever forget the silent groans,<br \/>\nor the many unheard prayers,<br \/>\nI, who saw Medusa\u2019s face and lived?<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s human without memory?<br \/>\nWhat\u2019s memory that cannot heal?<\/p>\n<p>Warehouse of the past,<br \/>\nteach me not how evil others were to me;<br \/>\nteach me what I need to do<br \/>\nto be among the redeemed<br \/>\nwho wrote on their ancestral walls:<\/p>\n<p><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>The past, if forgotten, pollutes<br \/>\n<\/em><em>the village drinking well<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Speak to me, memory&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>My tongue turned numb<br \/>\nwhen I saw a man struck by a bomb.<br \/>\nHe opened his mouth.<br \/>\nI did not hear what came out.<\/p>\n<p>When my tongue came to life years later<br \/>\nI swore never to utter<br \/>\ntruths in the language of cherubs<br \/>\nor the shibboleths of the celebs.<\/p>\n<p>I learned to speak like little kids.<br \/>\nAnd I say what I read on his lips<br \/>\nbefore his last fight<br \/>\n<em>Boy, run for your life. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>There is no other.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Not here.
