{"id":995,"date":"2013-05-30T02:39:34","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T02:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue16\/?page_id=995"},"modified":"2026-05-28T20:42:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T20:42:43","slug":"emily-izsak","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtls.ca\/issue16\/writings\/poetry\/emily-izsak\/","title":{"rendered":"Writings \/ Poetry: Emily Izsak"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Do We Not Laugh?<\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;ve been Shylocked,<br \/>\nI said,<br \/>\nas I dipped the tip of my nose<br \/>\ninto pursed lips.<br \/>\nThis is how Jews kiss.<br \/>\nYou pinched a pound of stomach flesh-<br \/>\nthough I owed you the rest of it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Fresco<\/h2>\n<p>The putto mooning the bridegroom<br \/>\nspews the same youth<br \/>\nthat dripped from your head when we met.<br \/>\nThose pigments are permanent.<br \/>\nThe sky has been blue since the fifteenth century.<br \/>\nWe braved the air simultaneously,<br \/>\nwatercolours and slaked lime.<br \/>\nI am dyed<br \/>\nblush pink with specks of cherry red.<br \/>\nAndrea&#8217;s heaven is missing your mustache.<br \/>\nForeshortened figures scoff at rubberneckers.<br \/>\nWide knees and plum feathers<br \/>\ntrick ill-equipped eyes.<br \/>\nYour elbows are softer than mine.<br \/>\nYour earlobes are three-dimensional.<br \/>\nLeave it to a poet to counter her own metaphor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Star<\/h2>\n<p>The lake is better than I am<br \/>\nat being still<br \/>\nat night.<br \/>\nYou asked if I knew about the stars.<br \/>\nI know about sacred promises<br \/>\nand letters squeezed into godless<br \/>\nnames.<br \/>\nH pegs in free-form holes.<br \/>\nI am sorry,<br \/>\nbut I\u2019ve gotten into the habit<br \/>\nof close reading our past<br \/>\nand if you could understand it<br \/>\nthe significance of our words<br \/>\nwould hijack your mind.<br \/>\nA Russian maverick<br \/>\nwarned against mixing in<br \/>\nflour before sifting-<br \/>\nor was that in a recipe for sharlotka?<br \/>\nSomehow<br \/>\nI have let him down.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Asparagoose<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s syncopate the space<br \/>\nbetween my head and your chest.<br \/>\nCurved cartilage makes for a pliable placeholder.<br \/>\nSay something nebulous,<br \/>\na mispronounced \u201casparagus\u201d,<br \/>\ninto our flesh apostrophe.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t contract<br \/>\nregularly.<br \/>\nI eat carets for breakfast.<br \/>\nI have enough in my breadbox<br \/>\nto feed a flotilla of script.<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t want touch so much<br \/>\nuntil the carpet in your basement<br \/>\nleft honeycomb imprints<br \/>\nin susceptible skin.<br \/>\nManley was right<br \/>\nabout dappled things.<br \/>\nUnder the string switches hanging<br \/>\nfrom bare lightbulbs,<br \/>\na wood beam ceiling and a zodiac<br \/>\nduvet (the maiden at my knee,<br \/>\nlion at your shoulder),<br \/>\nI lost the phrases I was saving for later.<br \/>\nI only loved you more<br \/>\nwhen you said,<br \/>\n\u201cI want to kiss each one of your eyelashes.<br \/>\nThat isn\u2019t poetry.<br \/>\nI want to do it\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do We Not Laugh?
